Kinship carers

Kinship carers:

Homepage - Kinship - The kinship care charity Kinship is the leading kinship care charity in England and Wales. This charity works with all kinship carers – the grandparents, siblings, aunts, uncles, and family friends – who are caring for children when their parents can’t.

On the 15 December 2023 the Government has published a National Kinship Care Strategy for England.  As part of the Government's approach to championing support for kinship families, as of September 2024 the role of the Virtual School Head has been extended even further to include children in kinship arrangements.Click here to view the government guidance document in full, Keeping children safe, helping families thrive.

Kinship families can request information and advice from the Virtual School, and schools are able to ask us for general advice. (If schools wish to discuss specific children/ families, they will need to gan consent from the carer.) Schools should track and champion attendance, attainment and progress, in addition to applying RADY principles and a relational and restorative approach.
